Think global, act local

bintangetje.jpgThere are moments that I’m proud to be Dutch. During the three week trip through Indonesia I found out that the kolonial past did not give me as a Dutch tourist a negative stamp, on the contrary. We traveled Java with our private guide. At first I thought that his possitive attitude was part of his job but this opinion evaporated in the first hours that we traveled together. Marcel, our guide, showed us time and time again the leftovers from the time that the Dutch were running the country.  He almost seemed sorry that the Dutch kolonial governers were not in charge anymore in running the cityplanning as these days fortune seekers swarm the city and take over each and every open space to build their shelter. So we talked about national pride and my attention was drawn to the Indonesian flag. Selective perception from that moment brought all kind of nationalist connections. The red and white occured everywhere from schooluniforms to, taraa, what was proudly presented as the first choice Indonesian beer. Compliments to the people from Heineken. You and your designers created a national pride beer withhout loosing the Heineken identity.
